Forum Brief: Hunting Bill

Ministers have laid plans to push the Bill to ban hunting through the Commons in a single day to avoid clogging up parliamentary timetables.

The tactic, normally reserved for emergency legislation, is likely to be used when MPs return in September. The government would use its majority to force through a programme motion that would severely limit the time available to debate each stage of the Bill.

Phyllis Campbell-McRae, director of IFAW UK, told ePolitix: The government is aware that there is now only a matter of weeks for the hunting issue to be resolved. If there is no Business announcement tomorrow, then we fully expect the Hunting Bill to be reintroduced in September in order for the government to deliver on its promise.
