Britain's transport system needs investment of at least £250 billion over the next 10 years to deliver improvements at an acceptable pace, according to the CBI.
In a submission to the government the employers' organisation calls for annual investment in transport infrastructure to be increased 40 per cent over present levels, mainly to remove road bottlenecks and increase rail capacity.
