Forum Brief: Carers

Millions of carers could be given the right to demand flexible working hours under plans outlined by Tony Blair.

Government Response

Mr Blair said in a television interview: "That right to request it from their employers and their employer has then got to consider it

"There's some financial support and then there is greater flexibility of working too.

"We are trying to improve this the whole time, we are trying to make sure we get more money to people who need it."

Forum Response: Carers UK

Imelda Redmond, chief executive of Carers UK, said: "This is tremendous news for carers struggling to juggle work and care.

"Our work over the years has shown time and again that flexibility from employers helps carers to stay in work longer.

"Employers also tell us that they get business benefits from employees in terms of lower absenteeism and recruitment costs.  In return, they get loyalty from employees."

Forum Response: Counsel and Care

Martin Green, chief executive of Counsel and Care, told ePolitix.com: "I welcome the proposal to offer more flexible working patterns for carers, but this must be accompanied by proper support and funding for employers.

"If we do not get the balance right we will be in danger of loosing some employers altogether"
