Forum Brief: Farming

The architect of the government's farming reforms has revealed he wants to encourage people to "be more like the French".

In an interview with the Times on Tuesday, Sir Don Curry says he wants the public sector institutions - such as the army and NHS - and the public to buy locally-sourced British food.

Forum Response: National Farmers Union

Robin Tapper, head of marketing at the NFU, told ePolitix.com: "Lord Haskins' involvement is really helpful and will encourage public sector catering to look for British produce, providing a tremendous opportunity for British farmers to supply this market.

"For too long, the focus has been simply on the lowest price, but changing the criteria to things like local suppliers, animal welfare and food standards means that British farmers are ideally placed to meet this opportunity. The provision of locally sourced products into public institutions could help maintain many local farm businesses, giving producers the encouragement to develop.

"The use of British farm assured produce will give confidence to public sector purchasers that they are buying food produced to some of the highest standards in the world."

Sir Ben Gill, president of the NFU, also told ePolitix.com: "It will be important that the whole chain from government departments, food service companies, processors and producers works together if the benefits are to be achieved. This will require real long-term planning to maximise when British and local food is in season and available, as well as opportunities to develop local sourcing."
