Forum Brief: Men's health

MPs are being urged to consider an improved screening programme for prostate cancer.

Figures suggest that one in 13 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, affecting over 20,000 men in the UK every year.

It can be diagnosed using the "PSA" blood test, which is regarded as the most effective test currently available for the early detection.

Forum Response: Prostate Cancer Charity

Dr Chris Hiley of The Prostate Cancer Charity told ePolitix.com: "Prostate cancer is now such a common cancer in men that there is now, more than ever, an imperative to sort it out - but its characteristic feature is 'uncertainty' and we still need to clear up the confusion surrounding testing for it."

Forum Response: Teenage Cancer Trust

Myrna Whiteson MBE, co-chair for the Teenage Cancer Trust told ePolitix.com: "At Teenage Cancer Trust we believe that creating a better awareness in young men about their own health and related issues cannot start too early. To encourage this process we run a comprehensive schools programme."

Forum Response: Counsel and Care

Martin Green, chief executive for Counsel and Care, told ePolitix.com: "Prostate cancer is a major health issue for men and every effort should be put into ensuring that there is screening, early diagnosis and effective treatment. This is not only good for patients, but in the long term is in the best interests of the health service."
