Train safety improves
Travelling by train is nine times safer than travelling by car, according to the rail industry’s annual safety report.
The number of signals passed at danger fell last year to 346, the lowest on record and half the total in 1996.
The Rail Safety and Standards Board said that level crossings presented the greatest remaining risk on the network.
However, Virgin Trains boss Charles Belcher has admitted his new tilting trains are "uncomfortable".
