Labour suffers from rift in the valleys

Labour's fifth safest seat was turned over by one of its own last night as Welsh assembly member Peter Law beat the official party candidate by a massive 9,000 votes.

Maggie Jones failed to defend a 19,000 majority in Blaenau Gwent following a row over the imposition of an all-women shortlist and the perception of a Blairite favourite being parachuted in.

Elsewhere in Wales Plaid Cymru had a bad night, losing one seat to the Liberal Democrats and failing to take their top target, Ynys Mon, from Labour.
