AgustaWestland, the Italian helicopter group, will help draw up the Ministry of Defence's £3bn helicopter programme, according to the FT.

The development comes in spite of MoD assurances to rivals that £2bn of the budget will be thrown open to unfettered competition.

The FT says that in effect the partnership allows Westland to set the parameters of competitions before they begin.
