Election 2005: Kennedy confident of progress

Charles Kennedy has predicted that the Liberal Democrats are heading for a "massive increase" in support.

The Lib Dems are confident of "record poll support", with gains in a string of marginal seats.

Lord Razzall, the Liberal Democrat campaigns chief, claimed the party's "decapitation strategy" of top Tories, including Michael Howard, was on track.

"They know who they are and they know we are coming for them," he said.

Writing in the Telegraph, Professor Anthony King says that despite the prospect of gains, the first past the post system will continue to work against Charles Kennedy's party.

Today's Sun, however, warns of the risks of voting Lib Dem. "Vote Kennedy... Get Howard," it warns.
