Francis Maude uses an interview in the FT to warn that the Conservatives are only a "tenth" of the way to winning power.

The new party chairman says there must be a root and branch reform of the party.

"We have got a hell of a way to go and we need to be honest with ourselves, not delude ourselves about how we're halfway there, he says.

"We are not halfway there: we are about a tenth of the way there."

Maude goes on to borrow Labour's election slogan to make his point.

"We need to look forward not back. We don't need to disavow our past; we don't need to apologise for our past.

"We just need to work out and be very clear in our minds that we will only get elected, and Thatcher only got elected, because we were the more forward looking."
