More than 30,000 farmers missed the application deadline for a new subsidy scheme.

Defra has estimated that more than 140,000 farms would be eligible for subsidy under the scheme, which substitutes a single payment for more than 10 previous subsidies as part of reforms to Europe's Common Agricultural Policy.
