Tories apply pressure over nuclear power

The Conservatives have declared they are in favour, in principle, of a new generation of nuclear power stations.

The move will increase pressure on Labour to set out its stance on the issue. The party's manifesto does not mention any plans for Britain's ageing reactors.

Some environmentalists have advocated more nuclear power as a way to tackle climate change, but others remain implacably opposed.
