Cook claims Brown is set for top job

Former foreign secretary Robin Cook yesterday said Gordon Brown would take over from Tony Blair "sooner rather than later".

Although the prime minister has said he will serve a full third term if re-elected, the comments in an article in London's Evening Standard newspaper have reinforced the impression that power is ebbing away from him.

With the chancellor remaining wedded to Blair on the campaign trail, Cook said Labour strategists "cannot get enough of the Brown magic".
