Charles Kennedy left the campaign trail yesterday and postponed today's planned publication of the Liberal Democrat manifesto to be with his wife Sarah for the birth of their first child.

The Lib Dem leader's wife was admitted to hospital at lunchtime, and her husband left his media entourage on board an aircraft at Farnborough airport to join her.

Deputy leader Sir Menzies Campbell will take Kennedy's place today on a leader's tour to Bristol.
