Polls confirm Labour lead
Polls

Three new opinion polls have given Labour a substantial lead over the Tories.

A Populus survey for the Times shows a big leap in Labour's lead, up from two to nine points.

The poll puts Tony Blair's party on 40 per cent, the Conservatives down four on 31 per cent and the Liberal Democrats up two on 21 per cent.

It also showed poor personal ratings for Michael Howard, who trails Tony Blair and Charles Kennedy in popularity on just 20 per cent.

Meanwhile a MORI poll for the FT puts Labour on 41 per cent, the Conservatives on 31, and the Liberal Democrats on 21.

The gloom for Michael Howard is confirmed by an NOP poll for the Independent that shows Labour enjoying a five point lead on 37 per cent with the Tories and Liberal Democrats on 32 per cent and 21 per cent respectively.

Interviewed in today's Telegraph, Howard expresses confidence about the current state of the campaign.

"I am enjoying myself - I love elections. We are going to go for it, " he says.

"Wherever I go around the country, our policies are resonating with people."
