Top Tories fight decapitation strategy

Senior Tory frontbenchers with slim majorities are being forced to spend days campaigning in their own constituencies to fend off the Lib Dems "decapitation strategy."

Oliver Letwin, David Davis and Theresa May, who all have majorities of less than 4,000, are having to forego many London-based media events to shore up support in their own seats.

Interviewed in the Telegraph, Oliver Letwin says he is loving the campaign.

Every day, the shadow chancellor arrives at Conservative headquarters in London at 6am.

Four hours later he is in a Range Rover heading to Dorset West, where he is defending a majority of 1,414.

Every day, he makes the three-hour drive to Dorset then returns to London every night.

"I love it," he says. "It's not a nightmare, it's a campaign: my favourite thing. I am not a liability. It's not as bad as having six-month-old twins; if you've done that, you can cope with any amount of sleep."
