ID cards could increase risk

A study by the London School of Economics has concluded that the government's ID cards scheme "must be" abandoned.

The report claims the proposals could actually increase security threats and are "too complex, technically unsafe and overly prescriptive".

Academics also warn the scheme is likely to be far more expensive than the government's estimate of £5.5bn over 10 years.
