Car-sharing lanes to tackle congestion

The government has unveiled plans to allocate a specific lane on the M25 to drivers carrying at least one passenger.

The carpool lane on the busiest section of  M25, between the M4 and M3, will initially be enforced by police but cameras may be used later.

Motorists travelling alone who use the lane would be liable for a £30 fixed penalty.

The lane could be introduced next year after the section between junctions 12 and 15 of the M25 has been widened to six lanes each way.
