Cases of identity theft surge
New figures reveal that cases of identity theft have shot up 600 per cent in the last five years.
Home secretary Charles Clarke said: "This survey highlights the fact that identity fraud is one of Britain's fastest growing crimes.
"The Identity Cards Bill that we have put before parliament will introduce a national, compulsory identity card scheme, linking unique personal biometric information to a secure database.
"This will ensure Britain can meet the challenges of the 21st century and provide the public with a safe and convenient way of confirming identity."
Meanwhile, the Independent reports that the national identity card scheme will not be introduced by the government until after the general election.
The Identity Cards Bill has been approved by MPs and was due to begin its detailed passage through the House of Lords shortly.
But it is now unlikely to be allocated more debating time before the poll expected on May 5.
