Science minister Lord Sainsbury swelled Labour's election coffers yesterday with a £2m donation.

The billionaire peer was persuaded by fundraising chief Lord Levy to make the gift, according to reports, amid speculation that the party is struggling to reach its £20m campaign spending limit.
