New law to protect scientists

The government yesterday outlined proposals that could see animal rights extremists jailed for up to five years and face unlimited fines if they inflict "economic damage" on businesses carrying out research on animals.

Trade secretary Patricia Hewitt said the laws were needed to protect investment in "a very important part of medical research in our country".
