Blair set for third term pledges

Tony Blair will tomorrow unveil six pledges for the general election as he seeks to counter claims that he will fight a negative campaign based on dirty tricks.

The prime minister's commitments will include one on public safety and identity cards.

Others are expected to cover NHS waiting lists, childcare, the economy and school discipline.

Blair is also appearing on Channel 4's Richard and Judy programme this afternoon - a development which leads the Mail to conclude he is keeping the option of a snap April election open.

Tory co-chairman Liam Fox said: "Most people realise Tony Blair is interested in their vote, not the issues."
