Quangos facing sweeping cuts

The Department of Heath has instructed the Health Protection Agency to reduce its annual budget by 16 per cent.

The agency was set up a year ago to strengthen defences against flu, Sars and bioterrorism.

The order comes after ministers vowed to save £500 million by reviewing health quangos.

Meanwhile, careers and guidance service Connexions could also face the axe in its current form, the Guardian reports.
