Ruth Kelly has confirmed she supports the government's policy on encouraging stem-cell research.

The education secretary has admitted attending sessions of the conservative Opus Dei Roman Catholic body which is strongly against such research.

"We have a 10 year science strategy, we have a policy toward stem cell research. I completely accept that that is the government policy and I stand by it," she told the Today programme yesterday.
