Fresh backing for detention without trial in terror cases

A slim majority of voters support the detention or house arrest of suspected terrorists without trial.

A Populus poll for today's Times finds that 53 per cent agree that the "government has got the balance about right between upholding civil liberties and ensuring security against terrorist attack".

More Tory voters agree with the government’s approach than disagree, by 47 to 43 per cent.

Some 52 per cent agree that "if someone has links with terrorist groups but hasn’t yet committed an offence, they should be detained without trial rather than risking them planning a terrorist attack if they remained free".
