ID cards could ease border controls, says Clarke

Identity cards would make it easier for ministers to drop border controls with the rest of Europe, Charles Clarke said in Brussels yesterday.

Speaking after attending his first formal meeting of EU justice and home affairs ministers, the home secretary said a successful ID card system could negate the need for border posts.

Britain and Ireland are the only two EU countries who preserve the right to maintain border checkpoints and passport checks for EU nationals.
