Newsnight presenter in impartiality row

The Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark has been criticised over her friendship with Scotland's first minister Jack McConnell.

McConnell and his wife spent New Year as guests of Wark and her husband Alan Clements, a television producer, at their villa in Majorca.

Jamie McGrigor, the Tories' culture spokesman in Scotland, said it would no longer be appropriate for her to continue to present the BBC's general election coverage.

He added: "As politicians we have to declare any interests we have before we make a speech.

"Perhaps Kirsty Wark should be forced to declare her interests if she is so closely allied to a member of the Labour Party."

A spokesman for McConnell said the interest in his holiday was "ridiculous", and it was up to him "where he goes on holiday and who he goes on holiday with".
