MPs compromise on Commons hours

MPs have voted to return to a 10pm finish on Tuesdays, but not Wednesdays, and to make Thursday's session start earlier.

The move to partially reverse the new hours was taken despite a warning from Commons leader, Peter Hain, that it would "look very odd" and might leave MPs "making the laws of the land completely knackered in the middle of the night".

Oliver Heald, the shadow Leader of the House, said ministers were "starving and rationing" MPs of time.

In supporting the return to late-night Tuesday sittings, he said: "It's not asking for a return to the old hours. It's saying let's have a balanced week."

The changes will be introduced after the next general election, after some of those voting will have stepped down.
