'Police state' fears rejected

Lord Falconer has said the government is not about to create a "police state" in the UK.

The constitutional affairs secretary said plans to introduce house arrest without trial for foreign nationals and British citizens would not amount to internment.

The home secretary would have to present the evidence against a suspect to a senior judge, he said.

"That is not internment. That is not a police state. That is a sensible measure," Lord Falconer told the BBC.
