British wounded toll hits 800

The number of British troops wounded in Iraq has reached 800.

The Ministry of Defence had previously only disclosed the death toll but the Freedom of Information Act is now permitting greater scrutiny of the conflict.

Geoff Hoon, the defence secretary, has made one visit to the Birmingham hospital where they are treated.

Neither Tony Blair nor any other senior minister has visited the wounded in the British hospital.

The number of US troops wounded in Iraq is 10,372, with 1,375 killed.
