The amount of racist crime in England and Wales hit record levels last year.

Figures published by the Crown Prosecution Service today reveal prosecutions of racially aggravated offences have increased by 2,500 since race-hate laws were introduced in 1999.

In the past two years, those prosecutions have surged by more than 20 per cent.
