John Howard, Australia's prime minister, has refused to back Michael Howard in the general election.

The Australian leader said he was "conflicted" over who should win because of his alliance with Tony Blair in the Iraq war.

The Tories have recently hired Lynton Crosby, the "Australian Karl Rove" who helped Howard's Liberal Party win four general elections, to direct the party's  campaign.
