MPs warn of free cash machine demise

Britain's network of free-to-use cash machines could disappear if the number of ATMs that charge fees carries on unchecked, MPs warned yesterday.

That would mean millions of bank customers having to pay to get access to their own money, they said.

Members of the Commons Treasury select committee added it was those who could least afford to pay the charges who were being squeezed hardest by the rapid increase in machines that charge for withdrawals.
