BBC braced for sweeping cuts

Mark Thompson, the BBC's director general, will today set out his plans to save £320 million and preserve the licence fee.

The Guardian claims the proposals will include halving the corporation's support staff and moving its children's channels, sports department and Radio 5 Live to Manchester.

There will also be 2,500 redundancies across finance, human resources, policy, legal, strategy, marketing, PR and related back-office functions.
