Tories to back ID cards
The Conservatives have announced that they will back government plans to introduce identity cards.
While some of the party's MPs had been worried about the civil liberties implications, leader Michael Howard is a supporter.
The party said it would continue to hold the Home Office to account on the costs of the scheme and Whitehall's ability to deliver it.
