Britain has criticised America’s human rights record.

In its seventh annual human rights report, the Foreign Office criticised the Bush administration for the continued detention of British citizens at Guantanamo Bay and the abuses against Iraqi detainees in Abu Ghraib jail outside Baghdad.

Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, presenting the report, said: "We have always made it clear, not only in respect of the British detainees, but generally, that we regard the circumstances and the conditions under which all those detainees are being held in Guantanamo Bay as unacceptable."

Meanwhile, the prime minister will become the first foreign leader to visit President Bush since his re-election when he travels to Washington later today.

Tony Blair will depart for the American capital this afternoon for two days of talks set to focus on Iraq, the Middle East and EU-US relations.

The Mirror quotes a "senior Cabinet minister" describing Bush's re-election as "tragic".
