The Inland Revenue is investigating a computer error that may have led to hundreds of thousands of people paying too much income tax.

Richard Bacon, a member of the Commons public accounts committee, said "sloppy" procedures meant that for years the Inland Revenue has been accidentally deleting personal tax files.
