New pledge on superbug cases

John Reid will today pledge to halve the number of patients who contract the MRSA superbug in hospital within the next four years

The health secretary will announce this morning that bloodstream MRSA infection cases will be cut to fewer than 4,000 by 2008.

Andrew Lansley, the shadow health secretary, criticised the decision to introduce further targets, which he said were partly to blame for the recent rise of the superbug.
