Geoff Hoon has been criticised after appearing to dismiss the campaign to save the Black Watch from merging into another regiment.

Speaking in the Commons, the defence secretary seemingly accused opponents of the scheme of putting sentiment above the national interest.

Jeff Duncan, of the Save the Scottish Regiments Campaign, said Hoon is a "fumbling idiot" who was being "incredibly insensitive" at a time when the Black Watch are serving in Iraq.
