The government's Healthcare Commission has announced that controversial star ratings for hospitals are to be scrapped.

Next year will be the last time the system will be used after which a new "health check" for the NHS will be brought into operation.

Meanwhile the CBI has warned that the Agenda for Change NHS pay deal, which comes into force this week, could trigger a wave of strikes in the private sector.
