A YouGov poll for the Telegraph suggests the public's confidence in politicians is lower than when John Major's government was beset by sleaze allegations.

Less than six per cent of voters think their own MP is engaged in suspect financial practices but 65 per cent claim they cannot be sure one way or the other.
