The man dubbed "Labour's favourite policeman" by some commentators has been appointed as the next commissioner of the Metropolitan force.

Sir Ian Blair will take up the post in February when Sir John Stevens retires.

Currently deputy head of the country's biggest and most powerful force, Sir Ian is known as a reformer and the natural successor.
