Ministers vow to 'force' through hunting ban

The government will utilise the Parliament Act to force the Bill banning hunting through the House of Lords, peers were told yesterday.

Environment minister Lord Whitty said that using the Parliament Act would be "in the interests of democracy" and that it would not provoke a constitutional crisis.

But former Treasury permanent secretary Lord Burns, who headed a government inquiry into hunting, said ministers would be wrong to use the Act to push through a ban.
