Peter Mandelson has called for a peaceful resolution of an ongoing trade row between the US and EU over aircraft manufacturing subsidies.

The incoming trade commissioner and former Cabinet minister was speaking at his confirmation hearings for the role in Brussels.

He said he was hopeful the dispute could be resolved without resorting to putting the case before the World Trade Organisation.

Mandelson was widely seen as having won over MEPs with the performance in which he used some French and pledged to be a "team player".
