Blair offers election olive branch to Brown

The Guardian reports that Gordon Brown has been asked by the prime minister to chair Labour's election press conferences as part of a peace offering following his ousting as campaign strategy chief.

The chancellor was sidelined in favour of Blairite Alan Milburn last month, but with the Tories set to put tax cuts at the heart of their manifesto, Brown's economic competence is being seen as a key asset.

The paper also claims that former Downing Street communications director Alastair Campbell will play a key role in advising the Labour Party during the campaign next year.

Meanwhile, the Sun says that the prime minister was ready to resign in July and hand over to Brown.
