London passengers braced for fare rises

Ken Livingstone has unveiled plans for a £10 billion upgrade of London's transport infrastructure.

But passengers will help pay for the improvements via five years of fare rises, London's mayor conceded yesterday.

Livingstone also plans to raise the current £5 per day congestion charge.

The proposals include extending the East London Line but make no mention of Crossrail.

Meanwhile, the Independent reports that the £300 million project to establish Britain's first super-fast commuter rail service will be delayed by at least a year because of cost concerns.

The specialised 186mph trains are due to start running from stations in Kent to London along the Channel Tunnel Rail Link but ministers are still arguing over which rolling stock to order.
