A relaxed David Blunkett appeared on Thursday at his first public engagement since the scandal over his affair with a married woman erupted over the summer.

Speaking in Salford, the home secretary said: "I have had a very good holiday. I am in very good heart and, as you would expect, doing the job effectively and up for the years ahead."
