Commission seeks to curtail working time opt-out

Employers have reacted with anger to a 12-page European Commission document which proposes to impose severe restrictions on the UK's opt-out from the working time directive.

The FT suggests the plan could "constrain a business freedom regarded as one of the cornerstones of Britain's flexible labour market".

Whilst ministers are likely to fiercely resist it, France and Germany appear set to push for the move.
