Brussels targets Britain's working hour opt out

The European Commission is proceeding with plans to curb Britain's opt-out of the maximum 48-hour working week.

Trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt said that the proposals were an unwarranted intrusion into national affairs.

"The opt-out is vital for business competitiveness and individual choice", she said.

The CBI vowed to fight the plans "tooth and nail".
