Energy chief tells ministers to go nuclear

Nuclear power will have to provide half of Britain's electricity needs if the government wants to meet its Kyoto targets for reducing greenhouse gases, a top official of the Department of Trade and Industry has told ministers.

The projection, by Adrian Gault, director of strategic development at the DTI's Energy Strategy Unit, undermines the promotion of wind power as the only "clean" answer to Britain's energy needs.
